How the calculator works
- Area = length × width (or the area you enter). Volume = area × thickness, and we suggest ordering about 10% extra.
- Installed price = area × the national price range for that job × your state's index. Removal of old concrete and pump access are added if ticked.
- Ready-mix supply = volume + 10% × the delivered price of 25 MPa concrete ($300–$480 per m³ nationally) × the index. It's only the concrete, without labour.
- Installed prices assume a standard residential slab of about 100 mm. Thicker slabs, extra steel, poor access or reactive soil cost more.
The old version of this page used fixed 2025 rates per city with no source. They have been replaced by sourced October 2026 figures.
Hiring a concreter: licences
Concreting for homes is licensed building work in most states. In NSW a contractor licence from NSW Fair Trading is needed for residential work over $5,000 (labour and materials, incl. GST); in Queensland a QBCC licence is needed for work over $3,300; in Victoria, domestic building work over $10,000 must be done by a registered builder (Building and Plumbing Commission). Check the licence number on the regulator's public register before paying a deposit.
- NSW: NSW Fair Trading – check a licence
- VIC: Building and Plumbing Commission – find a practitioner
- QLD: QBCC – licence search
- WA: Building and Energy (DEMIRS)
- SA: Consumer and Business Services SA
- TAS: Consumer, Building and Occupational Services
- NT: Building Practitioners Board NT
- ACT: Access Canberra – construction licences
Concrete prices: common questions
How much does concrete cost per m² in Australia?
Installed plain concrete costs about $75–$150 per m² nationally (typical $110), GST incl. Sydney is the dearest capital (from $86/m²) and Hobart the cheapest (from $68/m²).
How much is concrete per cubic metre?
Delivered 25 MPa ready-mix costs about $300–$480 per m³ (supply only, typical $380). Short loads, special mixes and remote delivery cost more.
How much does a 40 m² concrete driveway cost?
About $2,600–$6,000 for plain concrete and $4,800–$9,000 for exposed aggregate (national, October 2026).
How much concrete do I need for a slab?
Multiply length × width × thickness in metres. A 6 m × 4 m slab at 100 mm is 2.4 m³; order about 10% extra (2.6–2.7 m³).
How do I know if a concreting quote is fair?
Divide the total by the area to get the price per m² and compare it with the usual range for the same job in your state – the quote checker does it for you. A very low price often means something is left out (base, steel, pump, removal or GST).
Are these prices a quote?
No. They're estimates from public cost guides to help you budget and compare. Get at least two written, itemised quotes.
